Inspired by Van Gogh Art Kit
This week, we tried out a new art kit from Timberdoodle. Rightly called “Inspired by Van Gogh,” the kit contains scratch art projects reminiscent of some of the artist’s most famous paintings.
It includes everything you need to complete four different scratch-art scence; however, the kit contains only one etching tool, so if more than one person wants to work on a picture at the same time, you’ll need to find an alternative to use in place of the sharp bamboo stick intended for that purpose.
A stainless steel fork worked well for us. As you can see in the picture below, the tines made consistently smooth strokes. We were all pleased with the results.
And it was easy to vary the width of the scratch lines by adjusting the angle at which we held our forks.
I actually liked using the fork better than the bamboo skewer. Which is just as well, since my 12-year-old daughter preferred the wooden stick and used it exclusively.
The kit’s packaging recommends using this project with ages 5-99. We didn’t have that big an age gap, but we were able to talk my 85-year-old mother into giving it a try.
She enjoyed it as much as the rest of us! And the scratch art projects made for a fun and creative evening together when we went for a visit earlier this week.
The kit includes an instruction booklet with step-by-step photographs to follow when completing the scratch art scenes.
There is really no right or wrong way to complete the Inspired by Van Gogh projects. My mother and the kids followed the instructions closely, but I viewed the photo guidelines more as suggestions — just one among countless ways to complete the pictures.
That means I finished my project much earlier in the evening than the other three scratch artists in our party. It took me less than 30 minutes, start to finish.
The rest of my family worked for over an hour and still had a few sections left to finish. But it was bedtime, so they decided to save the rest until morning.
Interested in trying Inspired by Van Gogh with your own little — or aged — artists? You can purchase this kit through Timberdoodle as a stand alone product. But it is also included as part of their 2022 Sixth Grade Curriculum Kit.
