This week’s “Scripture Sunday” coloring page features Psalm 27:14. “Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD!”

Isn’t that the perfect verse for the year 2020, which has been filled to overflowing with so much uncertainty? And so much waiting?

We’ve had to wait to see if COVID will blow over. Wait in line to buy toilet paper. Wait for the economy to reopen. Postpone our vacations. Make alternate plans for birthday celebrations, wedding ceremonies, and graduation parties. Wait for schools to reopen. And barber shops. And churches.

Sometimes it’s hard to wait, isn’t it? Lucky for us, God has given us instruction on how to go about it.

Waiting in a Way that Glorifies God

Everybody has to wait for something at some time or other in life. The question is, do we wait in a way that honors God? What does waiting well look like?

  1. We wait patiently

Patience is a defining characteristic of love (1 Corinthians 13:4) and maturity. James reminds us to “Count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.” (James 1:2-3) The opening phrase in Psalm 27:14 is often translated, “Wait patiently on the Lord” — an injunction underscored in other passages, as well. (See, for example, Psalm 40:1, Psalm 37:7, )

  2. We wait courageously

It takes self-discipline and bravery to wait without giving in to fear, worry, and anxious thoughts. But, here again, God helps us wait well. “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7) By His grace, we can “be strong and courageous, all you who hope in the LORD.” (Psalm 31:24)

  3. We wait in His strength

God supplies everything we need, including strength to endure the trials we face or extended periods of waiting. “But those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles. They shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31)

  4. We wait expectantly

Twice Psalm 27:14 urges us to “Wait on the Lord.” In some translations, this phrase reads, “Trust in the Lord.” Either way, we are to look to God in full acknowledgement of His sovereign control over everything, and wait, confident that He knows our need and will answer our prayers in His perfect timing. “This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.” (1 John 5:14-15)

  5. We wait with eyes on God

We need to stay focused on God, not on whatever troubles assail us. Remember what happened to Peter when, walking on the water, he took his eyes off Jesus and focused instead on the waves? The LORD is the only one worthy of our undivided attention. “I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in His word I put my hope. I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning.” (Psalm 130:5-6)
