This free printable Liberty or Death Coloring Page features Patrick Henry’s soul-stirring words to the Second Virginia Revolutionary Convention on March 23, 1775. He ends his speech with a series of questions:
Gentlemen may cry, Peace, Peace — but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!
His concluding remarks remind me of Joshua’s words to the Israelites: “If serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve…But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” (Joshua 24:15)
It shouldn’t matter what anyone else does. What course they take. What decision they make. Each of us must decide for ourselves who we serve, how we spend our time, what we are willing to fight or — if necessary — die for.
Americans are blessed to have had forefathers who were willing to die to liberate us from tyrants. And Christians are even more blessed to have a Savior who was willing to die to set us free from sin.
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1)
