Columbus Quote Coloring Page
Happy Columbus Day! Despite the fact this October holiday has come under the fire of cancel culture these days, I’m celebrating the occasion with a brand new Columbus Quote Coloring Page.
Revisionist historians love to malign Columbus and assign malicious motives to his famous voyage, yet the simple facts remain:
Columbus was called
Columbus viewed his voyage as quest inspired and guided by God. He wrote: “It was the Lord who put into my mind that fact that it would be possible to sail from here to the Indies. All who heard of my project rejected it with laughter, ridiculing me. There is no question that the inspiration was from the Holy Spirit, because He comforted me with rays of marvelous inspiration from the Holy Scriptures.”
Columbus was committed
He pursued his calling despite much opposition and ridicule from his contemporaries. “Nothing that results in human progress is achieved with unanimous consent,” Columbus observed. “Those that are enlightened before the others are condemned to pursue that light in spite of the others.”
Columbus was courageous
“You can never cross the ocean until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore,” Columbus famously quipped. He later explained where his bravery was rooted: “No one should fear to undertake any task in the name of our Saviour, if it is just and if the intention is purely for His holy service. The working out of all things has been assigned to each person by our Lord, but it all happens according to His sovereign will, even though He gives advice. He lacks nothing that is in the power of men to give Him. Oh, what a gracious Lord, who desires that people should perform for Him those things for which He holds Himself responsible! Day and night, moment by moment, everyone should express their most devoted gratitude to Him.”
Columbus was commended
His tenacity and perseverance paid off. Although he didn’t reach the West Indies, his voyage led to the discovery of lands the Europeans of his day knew nothing about — a whole New World. And he gave glory to God for his accomplishment: “Thus the eternal God, our Lord, gives victory to those who follow His way over apparent impossibilities.”
Columbus was complex
Columbus did have flaws, as woke academicians love to point out and Columbus himself was quick to admit: “I am a most noteworthy sinner,” he confessed. Of course, the same could be said for you and me and every other person on the face of this planet.
Fortunately for all of us, a person need not be perfect to be used by God to accomplish great things. We must only be willing to turn our lives over to Him and be obedient to do whatever He calls us to do. Then we will be able to testify with Columbus, “I have cried out to the Lord for grace and mercy, and they have covered me completely. I have found the sweetest consolation since I made it my whole purpose to enjoy His marvelous Presence.”
