Soapstone Carving Kit (Timberdoodle Review)

Soapstone Carving Kit

My teen boys tried their hand at a new craft this week with these cool soapstone carving kits from Timberdoodle. The kits contain everything you need to create a beautiful figurine.

My 16-year-old Daniel carved the bear and my 14-year-old Samuel carved the orca whale. Timberdoodle also carries a cat, which I may have to order for my daughter before it’s all said and done.

The soapstone is already cut into the basic shape. You then use the enclosed file to round all the edges and add details like ears, shoulders, legs, and paws (on the bear) or fins, flippers, and flukes (on the whale).

The soapstone was much easier to carve than expected, but — as you can see — the process does create a lot of dust!

The entire process took about 2 hours — maybe slightly longer for Daniel’s bear, as it was a little more detailed than Gabriel’s orca.

The stone looks chalky white during the carving stage. The kit comes with wax and a polishing cloth to finish the figurines.

The wax does a great job of bringing out the beautiful and varied colors of the stone.

Finished Carvings

My boys absolutely loved learning this new craft and are itching to do more. If they could find a good source for raw soapstone, they’d love to carve a full chess set. Meanwhile, they’ve been trying out the carving tools on rocks they’ve found around our house. They’re not as easy to carve as the soapstone, but still doable.

Timberdoodle sells three different soapstone carving kits. If you are looking for an art project unlike any other to build your child’s confidence and skill, give this one a try.

While you’re on the Timberdoodle website, I’d encourage you to take a look around. We love everything we’ve ever ordered from this small family-owned company!
