Friendly Chemistry Review
Timberdoodle recently offered to send our family a review copy of Friendly Chemistry, which we gladly accepted. I suspected it might be the perfect way for my most recent high school graduate to learn chemistry, and I was right.
In the beginning of our homeschool years, I taught my high schoolers chemistry myself. Then the next five or six kids covered the subject with our weekly homeschool co-op. But my tenth-born, Daniel, had a scheduling conflict with the co-op class last year and needed a way to learn it on his own.
That’s where Friendly Chemistry came in so handy. In addition to the set of books and flashcards pictured above, the course comes with access to digital lessons which provide an overview of the course plus step-by-step instructions for doing all the tedious mathematical calculations chemistry involves.
A Crash Course in Chemistry
Dan really buckled down and applied himself. Every time I turned around, he was back at the books, methodically working his way through this course.
He had a bold goal: to CLEP chemistry by the end of the summer so that he won’t have to spend time and money taking the course in college. But to do that, he’d have to really know and understand the subject, most of which was 100% new and unfamiliar to him.
For most of June, he sequestered himself in the dining room with his textbooks. He watched the videos and poured over workbook pages, practicing each type of problem as it came up. He was focused!
Even on vacation, he carried his flashcards in his pocket and reviewed faithfully. I must say, his dad and I were impressed with his self-discipline!
Well, I’m happy to report that the combination of Friendly Chemistry plus a solid month of hard work and perseverance really paid off. Daniel took the chemistry CLEP yesterday and scored well enough to earn 4 hours of college chemistry credit. That’s all he needed for nursing school — wooohooo! He missed earning 8 hours of chemistry by only 2 points, but I’m confident he could’ve scored even higher had he not rushed through the material as quickly as he did.
A Wonderful Way to Learn
The bottom line: Friendly Chemistry delivers! It is thorough, well-paced, and user-friendly. If it can take my student from zero-knowledge or previous exposure to the subject to earning 4 hours of college credit in chemistry after only a month of study, just think what it might do for yours at a more sustainable pace over the course of a full semester/year. 😊
