Story Genius (& More October Reads)
I read five books during the month of October: two books I’ve read multiple times each, and three new (to me) books, including Story Genius by Lisa Cron. You can read my impressions of each title below.
The 5 books I read in October:
Story Genius by Lisa Cron
I finished Lisa Cron’s Story Genius while I was camping last month. Unlike most of the writing books I’ve read in the past, this one specifically targeted fiction writers.
Although I have no real fiction-writing aspirations, and despite the fact I did not agree with a few of the author’s presuppositions, I do think she gives helpful advice to would-be novelists.
Much of the book is directed at getting authors to think through questions concerning the characters in their stories, and I could easily answer those questions for characters in many classic (and obviously well-written) personal favorites.
Hard is Not the Same Thing as Bad (Audiobook)
I know I’ve already mentioned my friend Abbie Halberstadt’s new book. (You can read my review of it here.) But the audiobook version is out now, and since I spent the past week recovering from strep throat, I listened to the entire thing on one of the days I was sick in bed.
It’s such a great read — so full of Biblical wisdom and practical encouragement! If you’ve not already read it (or you prefer audiobooks to print), I recommend you check it out ASAP.
The Art of Neighboring by Jay Pathak & Dave Runyan
I first heard about The Art of Neighboring when our church hosted a book study on it this fall. Although we weren’t able to attend the study, my husband and I both bought and read the book.
It challenges you to “love your neighbor as yourself,” beginning with the eight families that reside in the houses or apartments closest to your own. The authors give practical steps for reaching out and building relationships and sharing the light of the gospel, right on the block where you live.
Caffeine by Michael Pollan
My husband and I listened to Michael Pollan’s Caffeine on a short road trip. It explores the addictive nature of this compound and provides a fascinating look at how caffeine affects humans and animals alike.
If you, like he, have ever had a headache after going without caffeine for a couple of days (or hours?), this book explains what’s going on in your body to make that happen — and what you can do about it.
Count Your Blessings by Jennifer Flanders
I’ve pulled my Thanksgiving journal back off the shelf for this season to read through the text and scripture verses, complete some new word studies, and color in a few more vintage art designs.
I’ve found going through this journal in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving every October/November helps cultivate in me a heart of gratitude and focus my thoughts on God’s bountiful provision.
Journaling is an effective and relaxing way to “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.”
