Friendly Driver’s Education Review

When I started homeschooling a few of my grandchildren this summer, I went from having one beginning driver (my son Gabriel) to having three. So I jumped at the chance to review Friendly Driver’s Education when Timberdoodle approached me about doing so.

I was already familiar — and impressed — by the Friendly curriculum line. My Daniel used Friendly Chemistry last summer to prepare for a CLEP test, which he passed easily after completing the Friendly course.

And since I wanted these boys to pass their road test on the first try, too, I thought Friendly Driver’s Ed would provide a good review of the information and skills needed for their final exam.

That it does. But Friendly Driver’s Ed is so much more than just a driving curriculum. It also provides a thorough review of how the different systems in a car operate and what is needed to keep everything in proper working order.

Review questions at the end of each chapter ensure the students learn the basics they’ll need to succeed at driving and maintaining a car.

Friendly Drivers Ed thoroughly covers the basics, but in my opinion, it is best used as a supplement to a state-specific curriculum, as some of the things students will be tested on during the written portion of their exam may differ from one state to the next, including age restrictions, fines for driving infractions, speed limits, and even specific procedures such as whether one can legally turn right on red.

That said, I’ve taught eleven of my twelve children to drive so far using a variety of parent-taught curricula, and Friendly Drivers Ed is the first I’ve ever seen to address oil changes, spark plugs, and how power steering works.

And the proof is in the pudding! Gabriel passed his road test with 98% results, thanks to Friendly Driver’s Ed.
